OTTAWA, Dec. 1, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, issued the following statement today on the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement:
"I am pleased to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the coming into force of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement. I also wish to congratulate the Nunatsiavut Government for achieving this significant milestone as well as the dedicated efforts being put forward by all the parties to implement this Agreement in the spirit of collaboration over the last 10 years. The Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement is an essential component in supporting social and economic development for the benefit of all the Inuit in Labrador.
Our overarching goal is to renew the relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples. This renewal must be a nation-to-nation relationship – one based on recognition, rights, respect, co-operation and partnership, and the LILCA is an outstanding example of that relationship."
