OTTAWA, June 27, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, issued this statement today regarding the train derailment on the Bonnybrook Bridge in Calgary.
"Our government remains concerned about the on-going situation in Calgary. We are always working to protect and enhance the safety of our transportation system and the environment.
"My department has sent a Transportation of Dangerous Goods inspector to the site.
"The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is onsite to conduct a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident. A Transport Canada Ministerial Observer will be present to report back on the investigation's progress. Should any deficiencies be identified, we will not hesitate to take appropriate action.
"Transport Canada is increasing oversight in southern Alberta as a prudent and precautionary measure."
