TORONTO, March 24, 2012 /CNW/ - "Thomas Mulcair has the guts, the charisma, the policies and the support of New Democrats and Steelworkers as new leader of our great party," said Ken Neumann, National Director of the United Steelworkers (USW). "Steelworkers and New Democrats are united behind Thomas Mulcair as our new leader."
"With Thomas Mulcair as leader, New Democrats will be taking on Stephen Harper in the House of Commons every day starting Monday and fighting for the issues that matter to New Democrats and to working people," said Wayne Fraser, USW District Director for Ontario and Atlantic Canada.
"New Democrats have spoken. Now we can get down to the important work of building on our party's momentum as Official Opposition and show Canadians we are ready to form government in 2015, with Thomas Mulcair as Prime Minister," said Stephen Hunt, USW Western Canada Director.
Steelworkers ran a four-month intensive NDP membership drive that resulted in thousands of new NDP members from USW ranks who voted in the leadership race.
"The NDP is capitalizing on the momentum of last spring's Orange Wave. The party has grown by 53% and Steelworkers are definitely an important part of that growth," said Neumann.
The United Steelworkers is a founding member of the New Democratic Party. The USW represents women and men in every economic sector, including mining, forestry and universities, with over 225,000 members across Canada.
