TORONTO, Nov. 6, 2013 /CNW/ - Keith Pelley, President of Rogers Media, announced today the appointment of Steve Maich as Senior Vice President & GM, Publishing, effective immediately. In this new role, Maich will oversee all Publishing brands and seek opportunities to evolve the business model and identify and develop new sources of revenue. A member of the Rogers Media Senior Leadership Team, Maich will work collaboratively with all functions and lines of business within Rogers Media to integrate and leverage core Publishing brands across the company's suite of media assets.
This appointment follows the move of former Rogers Publishing President Ken Whyte, who in October became President of Rogers Media's Next Issue Canada.
"Steve not only possesses deep knowledge of the publishing industry and brand development expertise, he also has a strong vision for the future of publishing content within the evolving media landscape," said Pelley. "We will be counting on Steve's leadership not only within Publishing, but as part of my Senior Leadership Team, where his strategic insight will add great value across the Rogers Media organization."
With more than 15 years of experience - 10 of which has been at Rogers Publishing - Maich is one of the most respected publishing professionals in the country. Most recently, Maich was founding Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Sportsnet magazine, which launched in 2011, making Sportsnet Canada's first five-platform sports media brand. Under his leadership, the magazine grew to 70,000 paid subscribers in less than 18 months. Sportsnet was nominated for 10 National Magazine Awards, including Magazine of the Year, in its first two years of publication. In September of this year, Maich was also appointed Editor-in-Chief of Sportsnet.ca, the largest editorial website at Rogers Media.
Prior to launching Sportsnet magazine, Maich was Group Publisher of Rogers's consumer business magazines - Canadian Business, PROFIT and MoneySense - and Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Business, where he led a complete redesign and re-launch in 2009, which increased the magazine's audience and improved renewal rates substantially. Before that, Maich was Executive Editor of Maclean's, Canada's national current affairs magazine. While there, he won three National Magazine Awards for his writing.
Maich has also been a reporter and columnist with the National Post and Halifax Chronicle-Herald, where he won several awards for his investigative reporting, and is co-author of the 2009 book The Ego Boom: Why the World Really Does Revolve Around You.
"I am truly honoured to have this opportunity to lead Canada's best collection of publishing brands into the next phase of their lives," said Maich. "These are challenging times in the publishing business, but also incredibly exciting times. Millions of Canadians continue to look to our brands for information, entertainment and inspiration. And we've never had more tools at our fingertips to reach our audiences, across multiple platforms, anytime and anywhere they want."
Among the 58 Publishing titles Maich will oversee are multiplatform consumer and business-to-business brands such as: Maclean's, Chatelaine, L'actualité, FLARE, Today's Parent, HELLO! Canada, Sportsnet, Marketing, The Medical Post, Advisor's Edge and Canadian Grocer.
