SUBWAY® Canada provides 2,400 meals a day to firefighters and relief workers in Fort McMurray Français
TORONTO, May 7, 2016 /CNW/ - SUBWAY® sandwich shop owners, who are active members of the communities in which they live and work, are mobilizing to donate and deliver 2,400 meals a day directly into the wildfire crisis zone. Along with their supply chain partners, PepsiCo, Sysco, Air Marine Cargo, Taylor Farms, Aryzta and Sofina Foods, SUBWAY® Restaurants Canada wants to address the most urgent need in the community and help the brave and selfless first responders and rescue workers as they fight tirelessly to help their neighbours. Additional partners are also coming to the table to support efforts.
"Our hearts go out to all the residents and relief workers in Fort McMurray and surrounding area, including those that are part of the SUBWAY® family," said Kathleen Bell, Director of National Marketing, SUBWAY® Restaurants Canada. "Our franchisees right across Canada are just heartbroken and wanted to do something to help. In fact, Alberta franchisee partners, Paul Sarlis and Mike Pilz, will be personally driving the refrigerated trucks into the crisis zone."
To help bridge the gap while teams mobilized, the local SUBWAY® Restaurant franchisees also granted the first responders access to one of the Fort McMurray SUBWAY® locations that is shut down, to retrieve food for the crews until deliveries are able to be made.
"I am proud to be a member of the Fort McMurray community, which has always welcomed me, my family and my business as a friend and neighbour. I couldn't be more humbled and proud to be part of an organization that is coming together to help myself, fellow franchisees, our employees and our local community and home," said Alex Melikian, local Fort McMurray Franchise Owner and DA, SUBWAY® Restaurants Canada. "I can't thank my fellow franchisees and vendors enough for stepping up to help."
With approved clearance to enter the crisis zone, the SUBWAY® deliveries of 2,400 meals a day will begin Sunday May 8th or as soon as the military agrees access is possible.
