Asks CRTC to Remove Barriers to Entry at "Let's Talk TV" Hearing
CHATHAM, ON, Sept. 16, 2014 /CNW/- TekSavvy Solutions Inc. appeared at the CRTC's "Let's Talk TV" hearing today to ask the CRTC to accelerate its push for further competition for Canadian television viewers. During the appearance, TekSavvy announced a partnership with newly-affiliated cable company Hastings CableVision.
Presenting to the CRTC's broad-ranging review of its rules for television and video services, TekSavvy asked the broadcast regulator to open the system up to more intense competition by removing barriers to entry. The CRTC had already proposed taking a hard look at some of these barriers, like restrictive wholesale arrangements, imbalanced negotiations with content owners, and limited packaging. TekSavvy, a strong advocate for Canadian competition, supports the CRTC's push for a more dynamic video marketplace.
"Unnecessary barriers to entering the broadcasting distribution market mean that Canada is missing out on innovation that consumers are instead finding elsewhere," said Bram Abramson, TekSavvy's Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer. "We hope this proceeding will help the CRTC open the gates to more competition which, ultimately, will bring new voices and choices to the Canadian video landscape."
At the hearing, TekSavvy discussed its partnership with a now-affiliated company, Hastings Cable Vision. Hastings has provided cable television in the Madoc, Ontario area since 1965, including its well-liked community television channel. The partnership will create new opportunities for both service providers. Hastings will help TekSavvy learn more about the complex Canadian television industry. TekSavvy will help Hastings expand its business.
"This partnership will give TekSavvy the experience and expertise we need to build on our commitment to our customers," said Marc Gaudrault, CEO of TekSavvy. "We understand that broadcasting is a complex business. We also understand that consumers want competitive Canadian television alternatives. This partnership, and today's proceedings before the CRTC, bring us closer to offering innovative, affordable television to our TekSavvy customers."
