WENDAKE, QC, June 1, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) would like to highlight the National Indigenous History Month, which objective is to remind and celebrate the contribution of Indigenous peoples to Canada.
"Our peoples have occupied and still occupy a fundamental place in the creation and development of this country. History is riddled with the many attempts to assimilate our families, our children and our communities which, to this day, are stronger than ever because of our extraordinary resilience. Our youth is our strength and pride. Yet, faced with the challenges that remain in our daily lives, particularly in terms of health, economy, Aboriginal and treaty rights, and our overall well-being, we are still appealing to this capacity that we have to unite, in solidarity, with all Canadians who want to know and share our history and stories," declared Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL.
Moreover, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in its Calls to Action, specifically called upon federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments to fully adopt and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as the framework for reconciliation.
"A true reconciliation with Indigenous peoples begins with the recognition of our history. This Month gives us the opportunity to unravel prejudices and bust myths, especially by promoting our cultural wealth and history through education. Governments must demonstrate, through concrete actions, that education on Indigenous history is also their responsibility and more efforts are required," said the Chief of the AFNQL.
