The Transportation Safety Board of Canada Releases Investigation Report into the February 2011 Damage to Rolling Stock of a VIA Rail passenger train in Oakville, ON

GATINEAU, QC, May 22, 2012 /CNW/ - The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) today released its investigation report (R11T0034) into the damage to rolling stock of a VIA Rail passenger train in Oakville, ON.

On February 6, 2011, VIA passenger train 70 was proceeding eastward en route from London to Toronto, ON, when it made a scheduled stop in Oakville. The station master observed smoke originating from an axle on a coach. Upon examination, an axle bearing was found to be severely overheated and to have failed. There was no derailment or collision. The investigation found that the overheated roller bearing had not been detected by a CN hot box detector.

The TSB is an independent agency that investigates marine, pipeline, railway and aviation transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
