MONTREAL, Sept. 26, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Meeting in general assembly last evening, members of the Concordia University Support Staff Union (CUSSU-CSN) unanimously endorsed a motion to engage in pressure tactics in an effort to push the university administration to negotiate a fair and equitable collective agreement.
"Our members have been patient, but that patience is quickly disappearing," said CUSSU president Danièle Berthiaume. "Last night's vote demonstrated that members fully back their union's just demands. So we tell Concordia: we are close to a deal, so close the deal!"
Among the outstanding issues at the table: the employer's creation of a second salary grid with different pay levels for positions at the same scale, more flexible vacation rules and improved leave for family reasons. The union is also fighting to remove "domestic" tasks from job descriptions, for example, to make and fetch coffee for managers.
The motion for pressure tactics excluded strike action, for the moment. But the 450 members of CUSSU will be more visible and vocal in coming days if no progress is made at the negotiating table. Talks resume this morning to renew a collective agreement that expired May 31, 2010.
