TORONTO, Oct. 20, 2012 /CNW/ - Toronto residents now have even more incentive to walk and cycle around the city this fall, thanks to the completion of the East Don Trail. The trail was completed by the City of Toronto in partnership with the Government of Canada.
"Canada's Economic Action Plan continues to deliver results for Toronto and communities across the GTA," said Joe Daniel, Member of Parliament for Don Valley East. "In addition to creating local jobs, the East Don Trail brings new opportunities for outdoor activity and makes Toronto an even better place to live, work, visit and raise a family."
"The City of Toronto invested over $1.19 million to build the East Don Trail and improve access to the valley, which enhances the safety, health and well-being of families and residents of the City of Toronto," said Councillor Norm Kelly (Ward 40 Scarborough Agincourt), Chair of Toronto's Parks and Environment Committee.
The East Don Trail was built in four phases over the course of the last year. The end result is a two-kilometre long, three-metre wide, paved trail from Milne Hollow Park to the bridge that connects to the Wynford-Concord community. It includes two canopies under the CN Rail line, new bridges to the south of Wynford Access Road and over the East Don River, hand rails near the north end of the trail, and a new trail connecting Milne Hollow Park and the East Don Trail with Moccasin Trail Park.
Through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, the Government of Canada contributed $697,000 to the completion of the East Don Trail. The City of Toronto contributed the remaining balance of the total project costs of $1.89 million.
As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund supported more than 4,000 infrastructure projects across the country, including over 2,000 key infrastructure projects in Ontario.
Canada's Economic Action Plan 2012 focuses on creating new opportunities for job creation, growth and long-term prosperity. Strengthening infrastructure across the country is an important part of this strategy. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership, and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 822,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
