VALLEYFIELD, QC, Oct. 1, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Toujours Vivant-Not Dead Yet will testify on Tuesday, October 1 at 3 p.m. before the Commission on Health and Social Services. TVNDY will say that Bill 52, which would allow people "at the end of life" to be euthanized upon request, discriminates against people with disabilities.
"TVNDY defends the rights of people with disabilities to life and equality guaranteed under Canadian and international law," said director Amy Hasbrouck. "Bill 52 will affect only people with disabilities, whether or not they have a terminal illness."
Hasbrouck said that when people with disabilities, don't have access to housing, employment, health care and voting their equality rights are violated and they are denied a full range of life choices. "How can someone make a 'clear and informed' choice about whether to die when they don't have any choice about where and how to live.
Toujours Vivant-Not Dead Yet is a project of the Council of Canadians with disabilities launched in January, 2013 to unify, inform and give voice to the disability opposition to euthanasia and assisted suicide. TVNDY is a progressive, non-religious organization that expands the work of CCD's ending-of-life ethics committee.
