LONDON, ON, Oct. 25, 2012 /CNW/ - The London Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have seized approximately 260,000 contraband cigarettes, $2,100 cash and a vehicle as a result of an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region Highway Enforcement Team Traffic stop.
On Friday, October 19th, 2012 the OPP stopped a vehicle on Highway 401 just west of Dorchester Road for a Highway Traffic Act violation. During the course of the traffic stop, the vehicle was inspected and contraband tobacco was located in the cargo area. RCMP officers were contacted and attended the scene, seizing the contraband tobacco, $2,100 cash and the vehicle.
Kenard CHRISJOHN of Southwold, Ontario has been charged with possession of unstamped tobacco and proceeds of crime under the Excise Act, 2001.
"The illicit tobacco market is a burden on all Canadians as it contributes to the growth of an underground economy that has been known to fund organized crime", stated S/Sgt. Steve Arthur, Acting Officer in Charge of London Detachment. "The RCMP together with the support and involvement of our partners are committed to targeting this crime."
Kenard CHRISJOHN is scheduled to appear in court in London on December 7, 2012.
