Randstad Canada shares tips to better your job search as many of Canada's unemployed youth stop looking for work
TORONTO, March 15, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Randstad Canada, the country's leader for staffing, recruitment and HR Services, says it's time to approach today's job search with a new perspective as thousands of Canada's unemployed youth stop looking for work.
According to Statistics Canada's latest labour Force Survey results, it's young workers between the ages of 15 and 24 that saw their age group lose 26,800 jobs over the month of February. A report by TD Bank on Thursday found there are 250,000 fewer young Canadians working today than was the case before the recession hit.
Leandra Harris, Executive Vice President of Human Resources for Randstad Canada says a labour market shrinkage usually implies discouraged workers are giving up on finding a job. "These young, discouraged workers have stopped looking for employment, either due to a lack of skills or unsuccessful previous job searches. That's the bleak situation facing many unemployed youth these days," she says.
Harris advises talking to a specialty staffing firm and most importantly to never give up. "Not only do recruitment firms like Randstad offer the opportunity for work while the economy is still struggling, but many of Canada's medium to large employers are relying on temp agencies exclusively for new workers at this time. We help them find the type of workers they want for the long-term and employ them on a temporary basis. Many of these companies often hire temp employees before hiring regular or "permanent" employees. Remember, temporary jobs can lead to something better," she says.
Below are a few of Harris' additional tips for jobseekers looking to improve their chances of getting hired:
- Be active, get involved: Volunteer, do consulting work, get an internship or participate in professional or community groups. You want to avoid large gaps in your résumé.
- Get organized: Job seekers should devise a daily action plan and set clear goals.
- Change your ways: if you're not getting the results you want, change the way you search for work. Update or make changes to your résumé, or send targeted e-mails to hiring managers.
- Search smart: Make a list of companies you want to work for and use that as a tool to guide your networking and outreach efforts.
- Consider a temporary or contract job: While it may not be exactly what you are looking for, employers are more likely to hire someone who already has a job than someone who is unemployed.
- Learn new skills in fields that are growing: Many of today's competitive positions require specialized training, so fine tuning and developing your skills is a must.
