OTTAWA, May 13, 2016 /CNW/ - A joint UNESCO World Heritage Centre and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reactive monitoring mission to Wood Buffalo National Park was scheduled to take place from May 26 to June 4, 2016. Due to the devastating impact from fires in Fort McMurray, the mission has been delayed at the request of the Government of Canada.
Reactive monitoring missions are carried out around the world as an act of due diligence by UNESCO and the World Heritage Centre to assess potential threats to the Outstanding Universal Value of World Heritage Sites. They are a valuable tool to assist the State Party and local managers in the ongoing protection of these internationally important treasures.
Parks Canada thanks the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and IUCN for their understanding and looks forward to welcoming the mission in the near future.
