TORONTO, March 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Unilever Canada was honoured Friday with the GLOBE Foundation's 2012 GLOBE Corporate Award for Environmental Excellence, recognizing the packaged goods manufacturer as a leader in balancing competitive business strategies and sustainable development. Considered to be among the most high-profile national sustainability awards, the GLOBE Awards annually recognize Canadian companies that are innovating in their industries through sustainable business practices. Unilever was selected for its achievement in the Corporate Environmental Excellence category.
"We are honoured for the recognition of Unilever's achievements in environmental stewardship and our approach to global sustainability," said John LeBoutillier, President and CEO, Unilever Canada. "To be recognized as a leader among Canada's top sustainable companies is a testament to the longstanding tradition we have at Unilever of embracing sustainability as part of our business model—made only more powerful by the launch of our global Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, which serves as the business model to both grow our business and continue to ambitiously improve sustainable practices."
Launched in 2010, the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan is an aggressive set of global goals aimed to increase the company's positive social benefits and reduce its environmental impacts by 2020. The Plan contains more than 50 concrete targets that will:
- Help more than one billion people improve their health and well-being
- Halve the environmental impact of our products
- Source 100% of our agricultural raw materials sustainably

The awards recognize Canadian companies whose corporate sustainability practices yield results for the bottom line. The highly-regarded national awards program is judged by a panel of recognized experts from the Canadian business community.
The global and comprehensive Unilever Sustainable Living Plan provides direction for both corporate planning and individual brands. By developing new ways of doing business which will increase the social benefits from Unilever's activities, while at the same time reducing environmental impact, Unilever continues as a corporate leader of sustainable change.
