FORT MCMURRAY, AB, Oct. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP), Local 707 is pleased that the court has issued an interim injunction on the issue of random drug and alcohol testing and directed that this issue be settled by expedited arbitration.
"We are very concerned about the issue of health and safety in our workplace," stated CEP Local 707 President Roland LeFort. "We want all of our members to arrive home safely at the end of their shift, but we disagree with Suncor that this is the best method to accomplish this important goal."
"We know that random drug and alcohol testing does not improve safety outcomes and that it is clearly an invasion of privacy," continues Lefort. "There are a number of other measures, including education and rehabilitation, that we strongly support and will work constructively with Suncor to implement."
"We understand Suncor's decision to appeal the interim injunction, it is part of the process on this challenge," concludes Lefort. "We would certainly prefer that they review their position on random testing and work with us on other measures that would improve safety in our workplace."
CEP Local 707 represents 3,400 workers at the Suncor oilsands and firebag in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
