WINDSOR, ON, March 8, 2012 /CNW/ - On Wednesday, March 7th, 2012, the RCMP Windsor Border Response Team (BRT) observed a 2003 Chevrolet Venture van containing several cases of suspected contraband cigarettes. BRT members monitored the vehicle and observed the male driver exhibiting behaviour consistent with the sale or delivery of contraband cigarettes. BRT members stopped the vehicle on Glengarry Ave., near Chatham Street and arrested the operator for Excise Act offences.
BRT members seized 12 cases (600 cartons) of "unstamped" cigarettes and several items of counterfeit clothing. The vehicle was also seized as a conveyance. The driver, a 46 year old London Ontario resident, faces charges of Unlawfully Possessing Unstamped Tobacco for Sale contrary to Sec.32 (1) of the Excise Act and Unlawfully Purchasing Unstamped Tobacco for Sale contrary to Sec.29 (b) of the Excise Act. The driver was released to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on April 12th, 2012.
S/Sgt. Robert Bergoine, Acting Officer in Charge of the RCMP Windsor Detachment said "the sale and distribution of contraband tobacco is an RCMP's national priority and falls within the mandate of the BRT".
