WINDSOR, ON, Aug. 16, 2013 /CNW/ - On August 15, 2013 as a result of an investigation into the sale of illegal tobacco products, members of the RCMP Windsor Detachment stopped a vehicle on Highway 401 at the Walker Road off ramp. A search of the vehicle uncovered approximately 330 cartons of illegal cigarettes which were hidden under a blanket in the rear of the vehicle. The cigarettes were destined to be sold in the Windsor area.
RCMP investigators charged two Windsor men with unlawful possession and receiving for sale unstamped tobacco products contrary to the Excise Act 2001.
During the course of the investigation, officers seized a 2002 Dodge Caravan used in the transportation of the illegal cigarettes.
Charged are:
Ali Hussien Ali-Ghezi (Age 50) of Windsor
Falah AlShimmari (Age 47) of Windsor
The accused in the matter are scheduled to appear in Windsor Provincial court on September 23rd, 2013.
"The sale of illegal tobacco products benefits criminal organizations who often use their profits to finance other criminal activities", stated Inspector Serge Cote, Officer in Charge of Windsor Detachment. "The RCMP is committed to targeting this type of crime, and working with other law enforcement partners to ensure we enjoy safe homes and safe communities"
Windsor RCMP is reminding the public that in addition to selling illegal tobacco products, purchasing illegal tobacco products is also an offence under the Excise Act 2001 and can result in criminal charges and the seizure of vehicles and other assets.
