TORONTO, ON, Oct. 17, 2012 /CNW/ - The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) last night announced the four winners in the first annual Power of Wind Blog Contest during the association's Annual Conference Banquet and Awards Ceremony in Toronto.
CanWEA launched the Power of Wind Blog Contest in celebration of this year's Global Wind Day and the growing contribution of wind energy to Canada's electricity grid. Students entering post-secondary education were invited to submit a 300 word blog on the subject of wind energy. CanWEA received close to 300 entries on what wind means to these students, what they think of wind energy and why it should play a growing role as part of our energy mix.
"We were so impressed with the enthusiasm, the intelligence, and the creativity of the submissions that we named two grand prize winners instead of one," said Chris Forrest, CanWEA Vice-President of Communications and Public Affairs. "Reading these inspiring words and thoughts from young people was encouraging because they see we must take real action in order to make change - we can't sit back and wait for someone else to do the heavy lifting."
The two first-prize winners that will each receive a $2,000 bursary are:
Madison McDonald, McMaster University (Ontario)
Leïla Côté, Université de Sherbrooke (Québec)
The second-prize winner that will receive a $500 bursary is:
Gabrielle Lamoureux, Concordia University (Québec)
The third-prize winner that will receive a $250 is:
Chris Brenner, British Columbia Institute of Technology (British Columbia)
Honourable mention:
Gillian Ramos, George Brown College (Ontario)
